Night birdwatching:

  • 7:00 – 11:00 AM – birding at the Tissa Lake
  • 11:00 – 12:00 AM – short breakfast break
  • 12:00 – 03:00 PM – raptors and day light owls
  • 03:00 – 04:00 AM – lunch break
  • 04:00 – 07:00 PM – birding at the Tissa Lake, observing flying foxes, waiting for barn owl
  • 07:00 – 09:00 PM – rare night owls and snakes

During our tours we travel around the area, if you do not have your own transport we can rent a TukTuk for you

Tuk tuk cost – 4 hours to 3000 LKR

It is also possible to rent a boat and observe water birds on the Tissa Lakes. Its cost 7000 LKR for person.

What kind of birds we should find

Waterbirds: Spot-billed pelicans, egrets, herons, terns and cormorants are commonly seen feeding or perched near the water.

Waders: Species like black-winged stilts, painted storks, and Asian openbills frequent the lake’s shallows.

Kingfishers: Common kingfishers and pied kingfishers can often be seen diving for fish.

Birds of Prey: Brahminy kites and white-bellied sea eagles are often seen soaring over the lake.

Passerines: Scaly-breasted munias, bee-eaters, and many others are active in the surrounding vegetation.

Owls: Indian scops owl, brown boobook, jungle owlet, brown fish owls, barn owl (only at evening birding tour) and only at night tour brown wood owl and if you have much luck spot-bellied eagle-owl

How to prepare for the birding tour?

To prepare for a birding tour in Tissamaharama, research the area’s bird species and create a checklist of birds you hope to spot, such as waterfowl, raptors, or endemics like the Sri Lanka junglefowl. Our guide will try to find the birds on the list for you if they are present in the area.
